Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a remarkable time — but the physical changes your body goes through can bring their share of discomfort. As your bump grows, the increased curve in your lower back, the softening of ligaments and the shifting of your pelvis can all lead to back pain, pelvic girdle discomfort and a general sense of things feeling "out of sorts." These are very common experiences, and you don't simply have to put up with them.

Chiropractic care offers a gentle, drug-free way to help manage the musculoskeletal aches and pains that often accompany pregnancy. Many McTimoney chiropractors complete additional postgraduate training in pregnancy care and are experienced in adapting their approach to suit each stage of your pregnancy. The techniques used are carefully selected with your comfort and safety in mind — and you'll always be encouraged to let your chiropractor know how you're feeling throughout your treatment.

If you need to lie down during your session, some chiropractors use specially designed pregnancy cushions to keep you comfortable. Every aspect of your care will be tailored to you as an individual.

If you have a history of back or neck problems, pregnancy can sometimes bring these back. A regular schedule of care throughout your pregnancy may help keep discomfort manageable and support your overall wellbeing during this time.

After your baby arrives, we'd encourage you to return to your chiropractor. Childbirth places significant demands on your body, and ongoing care can help you recover well and get back to feeling like yourself.

Please note: While chiropractic care can help with the musculoskeletal aches and pains associated with pregnancy, the evidence for chiropractic treatment of conditions such as morning sickness is currently limited. Your chiropractor will always be open with you about what chiropractic can and cannot help with, so you can make the best decision for you and your baby.

As regulated healthcare professionals, chiropractors have broad diagnostic skills. If your chiropractor feels your needs would be better met elsewhere, or that further investigation is warranted, they will liaise with your GP or midwife to arrange an appropriate referral — always with your permission.
